I wish I was more expert than I am. I don't know exactly how German subsidies work. I know that they do subsidize alternative energy quite a bit. And, politically and socially, they have mobilized their people to invest in alternate energy sources themselves, even if it means some financial sacrifice. Energy is more expensive there than it is here, so it is likely easier. They are also more educated about climate change generally than we are--they don't have the "free market always knows best" crowd to deal with as a serious political force; I think it is fair to say that that "pure" POV is regarded as delusional. There are people here in southern OH who have installed a wind-solar combination on their house, and while they still sometimes need the grid to supplement their energy needs, more often than not their meter runs backwards. They get more money annually from AEP (one of the more expensive utilities in the country) than they pay.

But perhaps there are German readers of this thread who can chime in to tell us more specifics about how Germany manages alternative energy sources.
