<<< But, given the many, many good works, it will be much harder to make that stick.>>>
Put this into perspective. The people Obama has to deal with in the general election are people that made John Kerry, a decorated combat veteran, with shrapnel in his body, into someone who was unpatriotic and cowardly. They did the same thing to Max Cleland. Max Cleland only lost his arms and legs in the service of his country.
Obama not only does not wear a flag pin in his lapel, he does not like to drink beer, eat pastries, and has no interest in bowling. Just on that alone they could paint Barack as being detached and out of touch with mainstream America. On top of all that, he belongs to a radical black church that has a black attitude, and that preaches black liberation theology.
Of course it can be done. Karl Rove made George Bush's driving record disappear and scrubbed his National Guard Service records.
The reality is David Axelrod has to be just as good as Karl Rove. He has to virtually make the Trinity United Church of Christ disappear, but he also has to scrub the links that Obama may have with the Church.
Good politicians can do these things, but you have to be willing to play the game. You can't pretend to be above it all and then do the same things that all other politicians do. |
