Poking around computer stores in Santa Rosa California- wine country, rural/suburban mix an hour north of San Francisco- I've found very few sub-$1k PC's for sale.

Salesmen report that people around here want something more expandable and powerful than what you get for a grand. They sell far more $2k setups with the faster processer, bigger drive, better video, etc.

I doubt that there is a huge market shift. I'll bet that the $1k units are second computers in the family or first time buyers. The whole market is expanding. Even if intel's profit per chip is down, they're selling a lot more chips...
