I have never seen McCain lie persistently.

He is not the "straight-shooter" that the press made him out to be in 2000. He lied about his experience "walking in Iraqi markets" last year, and lied about the conditions there. He repeated his lies for several weeks until the evidence became overwhelming. He has pandered to the rightwing evangelical constituency of the Republican Party this past year after lambasting them in '00. He has either lied about his knowledge of Iraq or he is badly showing his age when he persistently "confuses" Al Qaeda and Shiites, something I doubt any frequent poster on this thread would confuse. He claims he was "right" all along about needing extra troops in Iraq, but has not said what would constitute an actual "victory" in Iraq, nor how it would be achieved, even with the "surge". He and other "surge believers" have never acknowledged that what "success" has been achieved is due to Sunnis shifting against Al Qaeda and Shias declaring a truce. If those had not occurred, the number of troops in Iraq would still not be anywhere close to sufficient to keep the peace. He claims to be concerned about the environment, but clearly has given no serious thought to the issue of fossil fuels, given things like his recent fuel tax policy suggestion. I haven't the foggiest idea why anyone would vote for McCain except someone who simply wants a Republican in White House, no matter who it is.
