As has been pointed out, there are only few countries on Earth that the US doesn't have SOME presence in. Certainly, for the foreseeable future, we will have a national security interest in every country in the ME and we should have some presence in all of them we can be in.

Personally, I think we should have build a nice, big fat base in Iran ASAP. Just on general principle.
