"I just hope we don't have arrogant French and Italian soldiers here in the states lighting up their cigs with worthless peso dollars down the road"

Of course, in the best military tradition, they would light their cigs with worthless currency only after having had their way with the local women. Losing a war is not fun.

I used to read a lot of British books that were written before the first world war. One quote that I remember was:

"... the Germans are good at making chocolate and Cuckoo clocks, but they will never be a military power."

Yeah right! Fast forward to WWII. After sinking the German battleship "Bismark", the heavy cruiser "Prince of Wales" and its battle group were sent to take Singapore back from the Japanese. As soon as they got there, the whole British fleet was sunk by Japanese torpedo bombers. Hey, that's not fair!!

I saw an interview with one of the survivors last year. He said that it was commonly believed in the British navy that Japanese airplanes were made out of rice paper and would be totally harmless. The British were completely unprepared for what happened.

Wars are started by people who think that they can't lose. The Bush regime thinks that they can't lose - that's what scares me the most about this unfolding nightmare.
