Any idea how to compare the '89-90 and the '99-2000 recessions to the current day? We had a 7% unemployment in the last 20 years or so.....What were the widows and children doing them?

I tend to take all economic numbers with a grain of salt, regardless of which party is in power. And having a little economic theory still dimly remembered, I'm also aware that economics is particularly good at telling you what happened last week. Between discouraged workers and illegals working for cash I'd be hard put to guess at the real employment situation. I'd probably put more faith in some secondary measurement like sales tax receipts. Anyway, as far as the feel of it all, it feels more like the early 80's. However, back then I was sitting on an inside sales desk for a screw company and my customers where people like the GE appliance plants in Ohio, and now I'm a retired fart sitting at my computer in the basement, so have less direct info on how orders are coming in or being canceled. Wouldn't you know. Back then I had information but no money. Now, money but no information.
