Or you can look at it another way. Ms. Obama and Mr. Wright exemplify a huge section of black America, and though Mr. Steyn may not like their feelings of grievance, mocking them will hardly make those grievances go away.

Mr. Obama, who is betwixt the white community, which either didn't know the black community HAD grievances, or doesn't believe they should have them, and the black community which in some cases has large grievances (some of which are probably quite justifiable, others probably not so much), has a real chance of bridging the divide. Mr. Steyn isn't going to fix anything with his attitude- he's just going to deepen the resentment. If you want to bond a bunch of resentful people on one side together, that's a fine approach, but it won't "fix" anything. So I guess Mr. Steyn's appeal depends on what his audience wants out of the future. If Mr. Obama had no connection with people like Wright and Ms. Obama he'd be hopelessly out of touch with the black community- as the two other candidates are.
