My other and main strategy is to earn money in well-paid places with low income taxes and spend the money in low paid places with low consumption taxes. It worked well. We worked in Canada in the 1970s, Europe in the late 1980s and invested in USA in the 1990s. We spend the money in NZ which is not exactly cheap, but it's cheaper than Europe and USA for many things.
