Al, what's the difference between political pandering and following the will of the people?

How would you accomplish anything for the good of the nation if that means taking measures that will be deemed unpopular for a time, even years?

Being a "centrist" does not mean sticking your finger up in the air to figure out which way you should go. Real leadership involves character and principles. It means recognizing that there are many valid viewpoints to consider, yet having to choose between them based on a set list of priorities.

So in the case of higher gas prices, most people hate them and want to see them lowered (including Mindmeld of all people). Yet they are driving the sales of hybrids to record highs, as well as awareness of just how we shouldn't take energy like oil for granted.

Ultimately, poll-driven leadership never works.
