Let's talk about one of your points. You say we don't have the technology to become energy independent. So prove your claims. The proof that you are wrong is listed below:

* the Prius gets close to double the gas mileage than cars of similar size; replace all cars with hybrids and we reduce 2/5 of our auto oil use
* most major car manufacturers will be coming out with electric cars in 2010-2011, then we will have fully electric transportation alternatives
=> we should double the CAFE standards within 10 years to provide the incentive for the market to move in this direction
* it is estimated that we could boost our own domestic oil production by 30% if we allowed more drilling off our coasts and in ANWR

A concerted effort in both of those above could over the next 15 years cut our oil use almost in half and increase our supplies to the point that we could be almost 90% energy independent. That impact will most certainly lead to lower gas prices and save our country hundreds of billions in our trade deficit and in gas prices. It will also make our country more economically secure, because we won't be at the mercy of unstable, hostile foreign governments. In addition, it will make us nationally more secure, because we won't be pumping hundreds of billions into OPEC coffers.

It's a no-brainer, except for people with no brains.
