The Kentucky Derby was wonderful and sad.
First, as the philosopher Neil Diamond wrote, "I'm a believer." I didn't think Big Brown had any chance to win from the 20th hole in the gate. He not only won, he kicked butt. Nobody was gaining on him at the end, except for Eight Belles. That bodes well for The Triple Crown. He has tender hooves, so he has to be strong to recover for The Preakness in two weeks. And there will be some fresh horses who are waiting to pick him off. But they will have to be fresh and he will have to be tired or sore, because he is the best, by far.
Eight Belles, the only filly in the race, got second, broke two front ankles and was immediately killed by the vet. That sucks. She won all 4 of her other races and only lost to a super horse in the biggest race of all. And then she's dead.
I was going to bet the field, but there was no field bet, so I didn't bet at all. They saved me from myself. |
