One type is caused by nitrogen runoff, and the other is naturally occurring low-oxygen zones. Both types are increasing in size and number. The latter may be doing so because of global warming. The article Bob found so amusing was about the low-oxygen zones that historically have been found only in deep ocean. They are now beginning to encroach on continental shelves. - Allen
