Sure, but those techniques are expensive and slow. Enhanced oil recovery is being used to stretch out the production life of aging fields like Prudhoe Bay, but can't stop the annual declines. Such techniques may help establish a plateau in global oil production that buys us time to retool.

Meanwhile, maybe natural gas will take up some of the slack. We have huge potential for natural gas in Alaska, with possible methane hydrate development down the road.

That's consistent with the idea of peak oil.
