Quite the opposite, really, constraining your needs to meet the limited supply,

Constraining your needs? Who said anything about that. If you build a house and use the best insulation, how in the world does that "constrain your needs"? You buy the argument that bigger is always better - build the biggest house you can possible afford - not the house you would be most comfortable in. Americans have been so brain washed. Much of Europe lives as well as we do - some better - and yet they use way less energy.
