I grew up in South Texas, far removed at that time from the rest of the civilized world. We called our Coca Colas "Cokes" and other soft drinks "soda pops". Northerners who ventured south for the winter called them "pop". Tonic was something we put on our hair, as in Vitalis Hair Tonic.

When I went off to college in '61, the co-eds (ancient term for female students) wore loafers, white socks and dresses that were a little above the knee in length. No backpacks, cellphones or other modern paraphernalia back then.
