Sure, tell that to the Krispy Kreme diabetics. People aren't 'rational' in that they do what is best for them. People are driven by convention, social pressure, genes, hormones, low blood sugar, the media and a host of other influences. That is reality.

No, you simply do not like the trade offs that come from reducing your tax burden. You have choices but they have consequences you dislike. That is not the same as not having a choice.

If you live in a smallish town and Walmart is the last store standing, you also have the choice to not buy food or soap but the consequences are pretty bad as well.

Now you are making a broad brush statement about the marketing expenditures (versus R&D) for the pharmaceutical industry in the US. Where are your numbers for this? Where are your sources?

First you say that people have the wrong numbers for the marketing budget, then you say that people are not including testing costs and then you say they are irrelevant anyway because, heck, you think the risks are too high to be justified by normal returns. Huh? What are normal returns? What are the risk/returns of the industry versus those of other industries?
