Despite consistent demand growth for consumer electronics driving IC output, the downhill trend in average selling price (ASP) will result in a gap between shipments and production value, said Stanley T Myers, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of SEMI.

As uncertainties in the economy grow, global semiconductor equipment sales are expected to decline by 15-20% on year in 2008, said Myers. Whereas in the IC packaging and testing sector, the anticipated growth of IC shipments will spur demand for corresponding materials. Myers estimates that the IC packaging and testing material market will grow by a minimum of 9% on year in 2008.

While leading packaging and testing houses have turned conservative about their capital expenditure (capex) in 2008, Myers said he believes the consumer electronics market will continue growing, driving IC shipments to a double-digit on-year growth this year.

However, as ASPs seem to have no signs of improving, this will erode corresponding IC production value and sales growth at semiconductor companies, Myers said. He projects that global semiconductor production value will only grow by a single digit in 2008.
