The Chevy Volt is going to revolutionize transportation and oil consumption in the western world.

That vehicle runs a gasoline hybrid engine that powers lithium ion batteries. The batteries are charged by a household current in about 15-minutes or so. With this initial charge the range is about 40-miles on electric power. The batteries are supplemented by power from the 3-cylinder gasoline engine.

This car is direct drive electicly powered. Toshiba has a new battery released last December that should bring that all-electric range to about 140-miles by my estimates.

If the US fleet was turned over completely by 2019 to this kind of vehicle, the oil consumption would drop by roughly about 2/3rds. Add in Europe and Japan and you'll get a good case for low oil prices and low transport costs.

There are companies gearing up for this paradigm shift, and we will need more coal fired and nuclear power plants to support this as well.
