On the plus side, the staggered nature of SC appointments means that each nominee is the product of the president and Congress at a certain time. There is no one "right" formula for approvals, so the court ends up being a melange of different approaches with different results.

Which is probably a good way to keep it more or less anchored toward the center most of the time.
