Two points about the VP pick. First and most important (but almost irrelevant from an electoral pov), unless you're Nixon, you've got to pick someone you think could be a decent President. It's the decent thing to do. Secondly there's a big symbolic element to the pick. It's the big 'presidential' decision that the electorate get to see you make before November. Being forced through electoral calculation to choose Clinton is a sure fire way to flunk that chance. There's no obvious pick - or at least no one's made a case for one yet. If Webb had been a governor then he might be it ?
