Maybe, and I to some extent agree with you that cooperation is better than fragmentation.

However, if AMD licenses the EV6 tech from DEC and DEC in turn decides not to licence to others, it will mean that they will fragment by default (and not as a result of conscious choice by any of the involved players).

The other reason I think NSM may be less willing to rely on AMD, is that they REALLY don't have to. When you choose your own destiny, at least YOU chose it (this is what democracy is based on). Following on AMD's coat-tails may be well suited for Cyrix/IDTI now.. but after Cyrix is rolled into NSM, I'm not sure NSM isn't so heavy that they'll just tear the coat-tails off.
