It was the Supreme Court which ruled that restricting their ability to donate to candidates would violate corporations' right to free speech.

I don't think it did that, exactly. It spoke of corporations and free speech but I don't think it was in the sense that the corporation as an entity had such a right but that when groups like corporations and unions were restricted, their underlying people were deprived of their rights. I think. Too lazy to research it.
