Sony's launch of "MiniDisc" didn't impress anyone!

Their launch of the medium to replace the "compact cassette" has been a virtual disaster. Sure, it didn't die immediately like DCC did for Phillips, but it's essentially non existant two years after it's introduction. DCC died because it offered little improvement. But even with DCC out of the picture, 99% of the public has never even heard of MD - despite Sony's prominence. While we're on the subject, Sony didn't have much luck with selling DAT to consumers either. It would be gone too if it weren't for professional musicians and some computer data storage uses. Don't kid yourself. Sony is a recognized name. But they've been living off that name for too long. They're no longer a leader. For every Walkman, they've got three other dud launch attempts. Another example of a botched launch in an effort to become a new "standard" is APS film. Kodak is pouring a second fortune into a second product launch hoping this one will take. But they don't have a well situated competitive product to worry about... Big name recognition is no longer the guarantee it was. Sony made their name in the 70's, cashed in on it in the 80's, and is living off of it in the 90's.
