I offer sincere concern and empathy for your personal health concerns.

I have health insurance, and medical expenses are still onerous for me, too.

At least I can get medical care without waiting six months, which seems to be common in areas with socialized medicine.

If there is any public health coverage, it should take the form of some kind of catastrophic loss insurance, rather than "I don't have a doctor so I'll take my cold to the emergency room" type thing.

Where do you think universal coverage works well? I've heard that it stinks everywhere. At least compared to our system.

My logic is perfectly clear: people value what they pay for. If it's free, they don't value it.

OK, here's my story: Years ago my wife and I had to dip into our savings to buy hamburger for supper, and it was hard. In front of us at the checkout line was a family with two carts, one filled with steak and the other with beer. They paid for the steak with food stamps (my money) and paid for the beer with their own money.

A couple of years after that my wife got a job as a food stamp examiner. She had to listen to sob stories and if the stories didn't add up she had to visit the home. Sure enough, people who made more than I did annually with seasonal high paying jobs were able to get food stamps during the off season. They always followed the rules perfectly. Their cupboards were even labeled separately if there was more than one on the dole in the household.

The same principles operate with health care and all socialist programs.
