I agree with you on this, Barry. I remember when I bought my 486 when they first came out. Even computer-knowledgeable friends thought I was "buying too much". A year later, I added memory, etc. etc., the next year I bought a new one... And now every year I need a new one for my work in order to stay competitive. But it gets very frustrating. Liken it to buying a car -- you'd love to keep the old one and continue to use it as a backup or "second" car yet every year the roads change so much that the car is undrivable on the new road!! My kids don't want to use the "old car" read "computer" -- the new games are too slow!

I had an exchange with Paul about the Alpha a couple of days ago - they are going into pre-press graphics in a big way (Quark is porting to Alpha and DEC has announced a pre-press workstation with NT to Mac translation utilities, etc.) Paul didn't seem to think this would be a huge market...and after mulling it over, I will probably wait for the Merced -- yet in the meantime (2 years?) I'd like better memory on my system in order to take advantage of the Pentium II speed. And I'm sure I'm not alone...

I do wonder about corporate and government buying -- isn't there a moratorium on govt. purchases due to y2K and will corporations follow suit and not order as heavily over the next year?

(I agree about the ads)
