Affluent Canadians routinely come to major US Medical Centers for major procedures such as bypass due to the long wait times. Longevity depends on many other factors such as lifestyle, genetics etc. It is naive to think that having Universal Healthcare in the US will magically prolong the longevity to equal that of Sweden & Canada, countries that are more homogenous than the US The goal of Universal Healthcare is laudable, even necessary and will be one of the key debates of this election,at least as far as the independents are concerned. Radical changes, however, have to be approached with caution - as we say in medicine, the good thing about radical surgery is it always succeeds in removing the disease. The trouble is sometimes it kills the patient.
