I asked a friend about Eight Belles that knew much more about horses than myself. I wondered whether they could have put her in a sling or harness to try to save her. He said her legs were just broken too close to the hooves although sometimes the attempt is made to keep a stallion alive for breeding. As for her eggs, he said it wasn't uncommon to strip semen, but in vitro was simply too expensive.
