Air travel is such a loser in the long run.

Any other organization could have made money on it, but Amtrak thinks it is living in the 1930s. There is no reason they can't have high speed rail, profitably, between major cities all over the country. But if you want to take Amtrak from Dallas to Chicago, get ready for a long-assed ride.

Mass transit is infrequently profitable. Airlines in this country have had profitable years because they are subsidized by the federal gov't. Amtrak has one route where fares pay roughly 90% of operating costs. It has a few more where fares pay 80% of operating costs. Even if it could get those routes to break even, it would still hemorrhage money because it has so many routes where they are losing badly.....routes they service because its a requirement of the federal gov't.

What makes Amtrak so slow is the quality of the track and the fact that freight trains have the right of way. In fact, freight train companies are doing all they can to force the feds to kill Amtrak. And GOPers are leading the charge.
