Allen, from a Canadian perspective I could care less how some people characterize our health care. I read with concern your comments about extra costs being billed to you and even the possibility of bankruptcy because of them. To me that is disgusting, something no individual should have to experience, especially someone already heavily burdened by illness.
Last weekend we had a visit from my sister in law and her husband. She was diagnosed with breast cancer about 1 1/2 years ago and has undergone surgery, chemo and radiation therapy.
She lives in a small town and had to travel over 100 miles for treatment, and if I recall correctly, it entailed being away from home Monday through Friday for 6 weeks. She had a free bus ride in both directions, was given a room and meals in a bright modern facility with comfortable common areas for television, playing cards or just companionship. She speaks very highly of the experience. There was no cost to her.
Given that our tax payment day has just passed, the subject came up in conversation that her husband and daughter were also allowed to claim any expenses for travel when taking her for various appointments and treatment.
Socialism? Fine, they can call it what they wish, but we look at it differently as it is part of what we pay in taxes. Everyone is different, but I would not live under a system where one could lose everything they had worked their life for, due to an unfortunate and unexpected illness.
Cheers, and best of luck to you.
