To a great extent, I think it's cultural. In India, kids are expected to do as well in school as they possibly can. They are expected to work hard at school, and to study hard at home. They are praised and rewarded for scholastic achievement.

Here, most kids are allowed to spend all their evenings playing video games or watching television.

Here, there are pejorative words for kids who do well in math and science. Even our own President dismisses academics and scientists as "elitists".

Here, we have people who are incensed by the fact that evolution is taught in the schools.

What's to be done about it? That's a very good question. I think a good place to start would be to elect a President who leads by example, placing a higher value on knowledge and science.
