Thanks, Tim.

I've been looking at this stuff and can't figure this one out. I understand the concept of standard deviation and normalization. But how does Normalizing for violent-- non-health-related deaths prior to age 44 (murder, car wreck, etc.) -- in the US make the life expectancy of some other countries go down?

I just can't wrap my head around it.

If the US has MORE non medical related deaths than France or Iceland for instance. And we normalize for this fact, and the US life expectancy increases, how does France's and Iceland's life expectancy go down?

There is no mention of the methodology in the blog:

http://politicalcalculations.blogspot.com/2007/09/natural-life-expectancy-in-united.html

Nor in the sited report:

aei.org

Excerpt:

Two University of Iowa researchers, Robert L. Ohsfeldt and John E. Schneider, reviewed the data for the nations of the OECD to statistically account for the incidence of fatal injuries for the member countries. The dynamic table below presents their findings, showing both the average life expectancy from birth over the years 1980 to 1999 without any adjustment (the actual "raw" mean), and again after accounting for the effects of premature death resulting from a non-health-related fatal injury (the standardized mean). You may sort the data in the dynamic table from low to high value by clicking on the column headings, or from high to low value by clicking a second time.
