I drive an 11 year old VW Passat that runs on gasoline, which does 7.2 liter/100km in the winter and 6.5 liter/100km in the summer - that's 36mpg. Diesel cars are more efficient. My friend just bought a VW Passat Diesel which goes 43mpg, and if you buy a small car, a VW Lupo 3L goes 3 liter/100km or 78mpg. I think the 3L went out of production, but there are many efficient cars out there that go much more than 40mpg.

However, the way that people use cars seems to differ a lot between various regions. If you live in Copenhagen inner city, it's almost embarrassing to own a car - it indicates that you're a kind of redneck who prefers to be fat and be stuck in traffic jam than to be good looking, have fun, be a success, and doing your math on how you really get quickly from one end of the city to another:

This picture show a normal crossroads in the center of Copenhagen in the morning. I guess this is very different from Los Angeles, where you would actually meet friends inside a car...
