Going back in time a little. Many of the mines in W.VA. effectively shut down for a number of years as mandates came to protect the environment and concern for the health of the miners and people in the coal mining areas. This also coincided with using mid-East oil when everyone in the mid-East seemed friendly. At that time there were articles (and sorry no link I am writing from recall on this----mostly in Popular Science and Popular Mechanics) citing the large reserves of coal that exists in the United States. At that time I thought it was wise to not be using our coal and keeping it in reserve for the future and looking at new advanced ways to extract the coal from the ground while developing nuclear power plants (a peaceful use for nuclear power). Over the years, the coal industry and corporations have not stood still in looking at the problems posed in these industries. Here is a link to the Mining Department at West Virginia University .
