That's the beauty. I don't believe for one minute the 1998 estimates. Finally, the analysts are giving Intel breathing room to impressively beat estimates.

Why should INTC trade at historical levels when the entire market is trading at higher that traditional mutliples. In addition, I think historical P/E's for INTC were artificially low because the Street couldn't (and many still can't) understand the difference between a commodity chip producer like MU and the worlds leading most important semi-conductor company.

Can you name one other company on the face of the earth that could have such a huge impact on the global economy/society if they stopped producing their products? INTC is irreplaceable if not from a product view point, from a capacity view point. Certainly this justifies a premium to other semi conductor companies. As it is, INTC was trading at a discount to the average semi company before it dropped from the mid 90's.
