Justice Scalia in an interview by Tim Russert noted that america is the only country in the world where the concept of anti-americanism is used. When the french left and right go at it, they never accuse the other side of being anti-french. Both sides recognize the other side as French, albeit they may demonize the opponent in other ways. That anti-american type of appelation usually is applied to a religion as in anti-semite, anti-catholic, anti-islam etc. So is the US a country and Americani a religion of sorts? Folks came from all over the world to the US to get rid of persecution. Now when we have political disagreements we accuse the other side of being anti-american and demonize them whether its the left on bush or the right on the dems. Scalia may have been on to somethng.
