<<<How many folk who would vote for a Dem candidate on the basis of Obama's proposals, would vote against him because he is black? Difficult, if not impossible, to know. But I don't think it's a "large segment of the population.">>>

I grew up in a time when my parents talked about discrimination against the Irish. About signs that read no dogs and Irish allowed. Yet, at the same time, they were discriminating against Italians.

These were all terrific people. They attended church and were good Catholics. They took communion. They would never admit to harboring hatred.

Most of their offspring have moved out of the neighborhoods in the inner city of New York and moved out to the suburbs in Long Island, upstate New York, and New Jersey.

These are the Reagan Democrats that you keep talking about. They are all smart enough and educated enough to know that hatred based on race, ethnicity, and national origin is wrong. That would never come out in any polling statistics about how they really feel. But I think I know.

In any case, why is it so bad to bring this out of the closet and to be able to discuss it?
