You might want to contemplate the temporal characteristics of "in balance".

Yes, the planet is evolving and has been for billions of years. When it changes rapidly, for whatever reason, there tends to be major shocks for the living components on the planet. This has happened a number of times in the past (all sans humans too!), some of which led to 90+% of the extant species dying out at the time.

Currently, humans have altered enough of the planets habitable area to imperial many of the land & ocean flora and fauna as it is, plus we are now tossing in rapid climate change with a magnitude which our best science indicates might be higher than any of the Ice age period warmings. In addition, there are nearly 7B humans which is enough that we depend on much of the productive capability of the planet too. This is why we should be concerned.

As is typical for Chrichton, he confuses weather with climate in State of Ignorance. BTW, we are reasonably confident that the ice age cycles are linked to orbital dynamics, and the next one is not due now. One can always say "No one is entirely sure why" so that is mostly a sentence designed to confuse the ignorant.
