I have argued here before that an American citizen should have the same rights in all 50 states, not be deprived if they happen to be stuck in an odd corner with peculiar views.

As I wrote Allen earlier, this would be an ideal situation, but it seems to me that certain rights that are out of the mainstream, such as gay marriage and legalized prostitution, are more likely to be made available if all fifty states don't have to ratify.

In other words, having gay marriage be legal in MA only is better than not having it at all because TX and CO disapprove.

At least folks would have the chance to move to MA if they feel strongly enough about the issue.

Pragmaticism versus idealism, I suppose.
