I ended up buying "Selbach 2006 Riesling Auslese" (17.99)

An auslese from that producer at $17.99? That's pretty good. By any chance, is this wine store in the NYC area?

I'm assuming this wine is a grosslage (or even more generic) bottling, but even so I suspect this is a wine that will improve for the next few years.

Re As for the Auslese, to me that is something to take in limited doses.

Not for me. Bring it on! FWIW, I think that Riesling, including (or maybe even especially) the sweeter versions up to Auslese, is the most food friendly white wine grape. It goes especially well with foods that are a challenge for other varietals; e.g. Asian, Mexican and other exotically spiced cuisines.
