To my knowledge, there are no food shortages. There are rumors and expectations of food shortages. And there are high prices.

We have high prices for food staples, not actual production shortages. Because of current prices, people are eating less in third world countries, making it less likely each month that the rumored coming shortages will materialize.

Crop estimates for world rice production in 2008 are now coming in as planting ensues. The estimates are for more than adequate supply this year.
