A good Riesling and Asian foods are certainly a classic pairing. If you are ever in San Francisco, you should check out the Slanted Door ... a particularly exotic array of Vietnamese dishes and an incredible wine list filled with Rieslings and Gewurtztraminers (my other favorite pairing for these foods) among many others. But, in most cases I would pick a Spatlese or Kabinett over an Auslese for best pairing.

Unfortunately, this isn't a category of wine we do very well with on this side of the pond. There are a few examples here and there, but not many. Most are insipid compared to German and Alsatian versions. But then, many would also fit the price limit of this board, while many of the originals wouldn't.

For a good source, particularly of the Alsatian ones, check out Kermit Lynch kermitlynch.com His newsletter is worth subscribing to just for the prose and his wife's pictures.
