Rambus unveils advance in memory chips

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct 15 (Reuters) - Rambus Inc said it disclosed the first details of an important advance in the development of faster memory chip technology, which will lead to a doubling in performance in computer memory chips.

Rambus said it disclosed technical details of the Direct Rambus high-speed interface at the Microprocessor Forum here. Rambus said the advance will enable memory chips -- which have lagged microprocessors in performance increases -- will lead to faster overall system performance.

The news comes the day after Rambus beat analysts' expectations with fourth quarter earnings of $0.04 a share. According to First Call, analysts had been expecting $0.02 a share for Rambus's fourth quarter.

Rambus said its advances in memory chip design will appear in personal computers in 1999, but will appear in communications products and small handheld systems in 1998. Rambus develops technology and then licenses its designs to semiconductor and computer companies.

The company said its technique uses conventional semiconductor manufacturing techniques. Rambus also said it has widespread support for its technology, including a partnership with chip giant Intel Corp INTC.O.
