Spots, I think you are misreading my post. i think all transactions should be instantaneous.... but, if you have crummy systems then having it fast means nothing. A p266 pentium pro is going to run the cad app just as fast without MMX. it will be limited by the 75mhz caching on MB.
Remember , I've had armies of systems people work for me... I didn't miss any bags here... You made my point for me.. WORD is the app you mentioned. no ones going to make any money off WORD. I also, didn't say It shouldn't be fast..but unless it's a video application MMX isn't going to run it faster. everything right now is bottlenecked by the caching speed. Remember, Some of the people who helped invent bios work 40 ft away.
So, I vote for fast and I get an engr's a p266 pentium pros, but all my mfg'ing and and individual contributor systems run instantaneous on p166's.. that was the point I was making.
Oh I forgot your data mining.... I can have it run on a quality database with 5 million records and pull a report in secords on a p133 using foxpro no less...
So, you still can't name why I need MMX..that is what the post is about. Here's what happening and why I posted. The I/S group has crummy systems and they come in and say " we are going to really improve your performance and give you this MMX pc. But, MMX doesn't improve it at all.
So, I can make everything run instantly on regular p166 for office and p266 for engrs. all with no MMX... that's the point. I/S is so far behind it will be five yrs before any video apps really pop up to the top. |
