Ways to say that, for all the differences between you, you share certain things. And it's important to state differences in a way that preserve the commonalities as well. Especially when a president is addressing a high-level foreign audience. We acknowledge our differences but it's vital to project a confident US image and policy abroad, not one mired in sniping and backstabbing. Enough of that goes on at home already. It reinforces the myth that if we just kick the shit out of our opponents harder next time, Our Side will WIN!!!! and goodness and happiness shall prevail forever in the kingdom. Pols LOVE to use that one to get into office over and over. Somehow the goodness and happiness gets lost in all the ball-busting gutter fighting, however. Like what put Bush in the popularity cellar, standing on the shoulders of his VP on the approval ladder. Duh.
