I think it is inevitable that we'll see a cultural change. When my wife goes to the supermarket, she does not have to bring along every time 4 tons of metal. This is one thing that we'll have to learn from the Europeans - get into less massive and more efficient vehicles.

Safety considerations are very important, of course. However, with today's technology much can be accomplished without using huge mass. Moreover, when a higher percentage of vehicles on the road will be small, it will become more likely that when accidents will occur, all cars involved will be smaller in size.

When I need a truck to bring something large from Home Depot, HD will rent me the truck for a few hours for a few bucks.

This may not be a popular belief, but - imo - with large vehicles numbers simply do not add up. Any new oil discoveries will prove to be a very temporary relief.
