New Survey Shows Global Warming Will be Crucial Campaign Issue as Younger Republicans Grow Concerned

After nearly eight years of bashing other nations’ attempts to regulate a slowdown in greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), President Bush reportedly now wants Congress to pass legislation to combat global warming, and a new survey shows why the sudden change.

A survey of 611 self-reported Democrats, Republicans and independents found that a large number of young Republicans now view global warming as a serious issue requiring immediate government attention. To make matters worse for GOP leaders, the survey found that viewing TV advertisements from the Alliance for Climate Protection, an organization founded by Republicans’ arch nemesis Al Gore, made younger Republicans even more anxious for their government to do something right away.

The survey, which was conducted April 3-4 by HCD Research and the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion, found that before viewing the Gore ad, 42% of Republicans ages 18-39 wanted immediate government action on global warming. After the ad the percentage jumped to 51%. Among all respondents, 62% wanted immediate government action before viewing the ad, with 68% wanting it after seeing the ad...
