California Prop 22 passed with 61.4% in favor, 4,618,673 votes for versus 2,909,370 against on March 7, 2000.

The referendum added the following section to the California marriage laws:

Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.

An amendment to the state constitution with identical wording is now pending approval for voters to consider in the November 4, 2008 general election.
