When I hear Ahmadinedjad say he wants to "wipe" Israel off the map, I think something is probably lost in translation, and he finds that useful and amusing. He seems to smile and smirk on inappropriate phrases, but that may have more to do with him than the words.

To me, he sees the situation like a White Board, He wants to erase "Israel" and rename it "Palestine." He wants a government (one-state solution) that fairly represents the Palestinian people and Palestinian interests.

Basing our foreign policy on fear of nuclear attack by Iran is foolish. There is no Iranian self-interest in attacking Israel by nuclear weapons. They want their share, even if 100% or any other percentage, of "Palestine;" not to make it inhabitable.

Ahmadinedjad speaks of Iran's long history and culture. He couldn't possibly want Iran to be adversely impacted by his own nuclear weapons, by retaliation, or by preemptive strikes.

We are much better off talking with them then critiquing such a proposed policy (which we're following to some degree anyway) as appeasement.

As many people have known for years, and bin Laden said last week, the Israeli-Palestinian situation is at the root of why we were attacked on 9/11/01.

A 2-state solution has been in front of us as in everyone's best interest. Bush waited 7 years to move that to today's priority, and we are no further advanced now than 4-5 years ago.
