If nothing "substantial" comes up between now and the end of both conventions I think everything will turn on how the debates come off and how well Obama makes up with Clinton.

At this point I think Obama NEEDS Clinton on the ticket. I think she'd accept the VP spot and I think the CONVENTION could USE that. Half the people there are going to be Clinton people and I don't think they're going to be that enthusiastic unless they know that she's going to be campaigning on. This is an unusual year where 2 candidates are pretty much splitting the votes. There are TWO constituencies besides the young that have been empowered by this election and those are African Americans and Women. If Obama tries to exclude Clinton at this point I think it would be a mistake.

When it comes to the debates, I think Obama will be walking a very FINE line. He will be debating a National Hero and if it even "appears" that he isn't respecting Mr. McCain it will hurt him badly. He will have to go after McCain while making it appear that he is not only respectful but reverent. He will have to BURY Mr. McCain in knowledge and understanding of issues. He will have to make the Country feel that he is talking to his Grandfather and he loves him, but his Grandfather even though he is a great man, is NOT the man to lead the Country.

These debates are going to be UNIQUE in my lifetime. They might be UNIQUE in the history of the United States.
